After a being in South America for 2 years and riding over 60,000 miles, Eric Lange from RideAdventures takes some time out and shares what he’s learned about packing for a motorcycle trip. I really appreciate Eric devoting time to share with the rest of the ADV community on this subject. I’m pretty confident he’s figured out what works best for him and his setup after a trip such as this. Thanks again Eric!

Winter weather has officially set in here in the Midwest. This means you either park the bike for the winter or get some good cold weather riding gear. For me, I don’t really have cold weather gear, just my Fieldsheer Adventure jacket, heated grips, good balaclava and some Patagonia Men’s Capilene 3 under pants and shirt. During my search for quality gear at a good price, I found a few videos from RevZilla that review some great gear. But only if you have a lot of cash to throw down, that’s for sure. Either way, very cool gear for my wishlist! I’m leaning towards picking up some heated gear before replacing my jacket & pants.

For me, safety comes first!
I wanted a jacket that was bright, lots of reflective material and great protection at a good price. My research narrowed it down to these two jackets.

Tour Master Transition 2 – $170

Fieldsheer Adventure – $150

I choose to go with the Fieldsheer Adventure from Motorcycle Closeouts mainly for two reasons; one the neck garter & the reflective back is like no other jacket I’ve ever saw! Two, it rivals the more expensive jackets! Checkout this review from Overland Journal. Simply awesome. On the last ride with a group of us, another rider said my jacket was more visible than any other jacket on the ride.. by far! Here’s a little review video I did after receiving my jacket.

Outer Jacket

Click here to view the embedded video.

Inner Liner

Click here to view the embedded video.

I highly recommend this jacket, and now I wish Fieldsheer would take this jacket and make a mesh version of it already!

Another first purchase was the Wolfman Enduro Tank bag, I ordered these from Dual Sport Armory also (used the WR discount). This thing is high quality and fits the bike great. I ride it higher up on the tank so its off the seat. When fueling up, I just release the strap clips, slide it to the side and fuel. No worries!

After a few ebay sales I picked up the Wolfman Saddle & Duffle bags. Again, they fit the bike great as you can see. They mount easy and you don’t even notice they are there. Highfive also did a nice review of them here. Dual Sport Armory got the call on these too.

To mount the lower straps I used the included ring clips and attached them to the passenger peg holes. Had to hit the hardware store for longer bolts but with a little Loc-tite, they have stayed secure.

More first mods, go here.
