UTAH 2013 // UTBDR

Day 5

As you saw in my last Day 3/4 video.. It rained all night on us… I got up about 5:45 to use the Men’s room (you just make your own, btw), luckily while I was busy it stopped raining, just as I was walking back to my tent, this huge cloud rolled over our campsite, I could barely see 3 ft in front of me. Then it thundered and started to rain again, I rain back in my tent.

Little did I know at that very time the rain moved back in, Dingweed just got out of his tent to use his Men’s room, and well he got a bit wet!

With all the rain, the roads on Reservation Ridge were slick as snot.. both wheels would slide out, like you were riding on ice. I think at this point I started to like SAND!!!!

IT WAS A MESS!

We held up here for a while trying to let the roads dry up a bit.. good thing we did, it made going to get gas a bit easier.. but, we had to come back up this way to continue our route..

While fueling up.. we saw this little guy..

As you saw in BigDog’s photos, we rode in this nasty stuff for what seemed like miles, all of us were sliding around. I was behind BigDog and I saw him slide a complete 90 degree counter-clockwise slide, in complete control of the situation, steered into the rut on the left side of the road then power out using the ditch as a rail system. This was one place I was happy to ride in a rut!

Luckily before we hit the mud hill of doom, we found a dry downhill road we were able to clear our knobbies a bit…

Then the route took us down a narrow four-wheeler dark dirt path.. we met a few ADV’rs on big bikes that were stopped wondering if they should turn around… we went around them and kept calm..

Here we are at the bottom of the hill..

Just around that bend from BigDog.. the trail opened up. We hoped those big bikes kept going because I’m not sure they would of made it back up that hill?!?

Man the riding got AWESOME.. It was a great trail back here in Cow Hollow…

We kept riding and started seeing some pretty nasty clouds in our path..

Time to get the rain gear on !! I had one heck of a time getting my FroggToggs on.. I hate those things.. I need Santa to bring me some GoreTex already!!

Here’s a couple more cool photos I took with my GoPro..

Well put together I really enjoyed your story. The pictures were great and the video really gives an idea what the riding is like. I hope to do the utbdr next summer. I did the wbdr last july and really enjoyed it but desert scenery on your trip is what I want to experience.
    Thanks for posting your ride.

Hey Rob.. yes the UTBDR needs to be on your list! It has awesome scenery and was a lot of fun. Just be prepared to ride some sand!! I couldn’t believe how hot it got on a few days we rode it that late in the season.. getting up in the mountains cooled things of fast!

I’m hoping to get another BDR ride in next year.. just not sure which one. Be safe and keep me posted..

Hey Bill! Very good post on your ride, looks like y’all had a good time and some very nice scenery! I’m considering the COBDR next summer, just can’t decide between the TW and the Versys 😀

Hope things are going well up there!

Hey Matt! Glad to hear from you.. and I know the Versys is treating you very well!! The COBDR will be my next ride I think.. it will be on my WR250R for sure.. there’s some technical spots on it.. but I guess you could route around it if you took the Versys. But for me, it’d be the TW!

You could do a great tarmac route to in CO if you wanted to go 2up with your girlfriend.. all the roads are just awesome out there!

Take care and have a Merry Christmas!!

Sorry for the late reply….started planning my CO trip for this summer last night. It’ll be on the Versys, and will combine parts of the COBDR with other roads that I’m just interested in exploring. I’m going to attempt some technical stuff in Black Bear Pass and a few other tough spots so we’ll see how that goes! Going to do Black Canyon, Million Dollar Hwy, Pikes Peak and a few other spots that I’ve never done. Looks like I should ride a good part of southern CO west of I-25.

Hope all is well with you and the family! Merry Christmas to you too!

Great ride report, really enjoyed it. Photo’s and video are great. I have had a WR250R for a couple of years but only ride it on day trips in the bush around my area in South Australia and am amazed at how far and where people ride these great bikes.
